Great Rugby Sledgers
'Sledging', or 'trash talking' as it is referred to in the US, is the fine art of on field banter used to distract and intimidate. Rugby has had some truly class acts when it comes to sledging and below you will find a sampling of some of the masters.
"Take that you six-toed ****ers!"
- Gareth Chilcott after scoring a try in the dark recesses of the West Country.
"Do that again son and you will live up to your name"
- Gareth Chilcott to young Welshman Dai Young after some 'creative play' from Dai.
"Leonard, you don't need a physio, you need a midwife!"
- Ireland fan to Jason Leonard while the England prop was receiving treatment at Lansdowne Road
Gordon Ross: "You're not that good, are you, son?"
Austin Healey: "I don't even know what your name is, mate"
"You wouldn't have dropped it if it was a doughnut, you fat p***k"
- What Gordon Falcon whispered in Ollie le Roux's ear after the Bok dropped a try scoring pass
"Look, Andy, there's a bit you've missed - and there's another!"
- Finlay Calder to Andy Robinson, after the England flanker was described in the 1989 Calcutta Cup match program as covering every blade of grass
"Hit me! Look at me, I'm huge! How could you miss me?"
- Paul O'Connell, standing tall at the front of a lineout at Twickenham, tries to put off England thrower Steve Thompson
Austin Healey: "Are you nervous Danny?"
Danny Hipkiss: "Well, I am a bit, Austin"
Austin Healey: "Well, you should be. Because you're s**t"
